Teaching & Research

Teaching:

 I believe in activity oriented teaching of integrative organismal biology in which students are allowed to experimentally test their theoretical knowledge gained the class room. This enables them to appreciate the observational and experimental methods of study. I believe in active and interactive learning by ensuring frequent contacts with students. I have implemented a group project component in my classes to allow students to collaborate with one another. For example, during last session (2008-2009), a group of students conducted project on “Impact of invasive alien fish Gambusia on native community composition in freshwater ecosystem”. The report has been submitted to the MOEF, Government of India.  As a teacher, I seek to help students learn more effectively by challenging them with problems and equipping them with critical thinking skills. My specific goals as a teacher are:

  1. To teach students how to gather, analyze and appreciate scientific facts and the relevant theories, arguments, evidence and counter-evidence;
  2. To equip students with the ability to analyze and think critically so that they can resolve problems they will face later in life.

 To fulfill my teaching goals, I employ the following teaching strategies:

“Teach and learn” approach and “Inquiry- and evidence-based learning”

I often list a few key questions for students to work on and then briefly discuss the possible answers during the following class. These questions require students to unearth patterns, discover new facts and data and generate new concepts. Students, through working with these questions, become familiar with key concepts and learn the elemental tools of inquiry. Their answers have been collated, corrected and presented as project reports to the Principal, A. N. D. College, University of Delhi. Many students under my guidance (Swati Gupta in 2006; Lipsa Panda, 2009) have got first prize in the Inter College competition on ecological projects organized by the DOE, Government of NCT of Delhi.

As the study of ecological concepts is evidence-based, students must be able to justify why they accept or reject a particular concept or theory based only on existing evidence. I often present the existing evidence and possible justification when I explain complex and critical ecological facts and concepts. When students find evidence to support the theories learnt, these theories become more relevant and students remember them better.
